Smt. Vatsala Rangaswami was born in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu on April 7th 1927 ( around the same time, our mother was born). Smt.Vatsala started writing & composing songs with inherent poetic knowledge. She wrote her first song 'Kantini' in Madhyamavathi while visiting the temple at Tirumala. Her writing was spontaneous as the words would naturally flow with Bhakti towards the Lord. She wrote more than 600 songs in Telugu, Tamil & Sanskrit. Smt. Vatsala grew up in Tirupati & had a great devotion towards Lord Venkateswara & also towards Tyagaraja Kritis. Her father Late Sri Madabhusi Gopalachari was a famous poet and writer, who translated the Telugu Thiruppavai All her songs are in praise of Lord Venkateswara, Alamelu Manga, and other gods and goddesses. A book was published featuring selected kritis written over the years. Srimati Vatsala Rangaswami is a natural poet. Her intense Bhakti is vividly demonstrated in her compositions. Vatsala Amma also was an artist who created beautiful art on Gods and Goddesses using all recycled materials! Her art was covered in the Chennai Times and in Art Exhibitions. Vatsala Amma personality embodied the very essence of Vaatsalyam which means complete unconditional love without expectations. Coincidentally her name was an appropriate choice and she lived up to the true meaning of her name. Her short poem translated from Telugu summarizes her Vaatsalyam laden personality: The love (Prema) in my heart is like the lamp. Patience is the oil that is poured in the lamp. Affection ( Naemamu) is the wick that is lit with my life (Jeevam).
